It's All About Doing What's Best for Kids
Nine years ago I received a call from a friend asking if I would consider running for the school board. The current trustee was not seeking re-election, and my friend thought that I would be a great candidate because of my experience as a PTA volunteer. Back in 2011, I was an officer on three different PTAs: Tejeda Middle School, Johnson High School, and North East ISD Council of PTAs. I had been serving on all three PTAs for four years. I was a stay at home mom who was never home because I was always volunteering somewhere.
I was surprised by the call because being a school board member was never on my radar. When my friend told me that I would have to campaign and go through an election I paused. FUN FACT – I hate politics. I am the least political person that I know. I told her that I would think about it. After much discussion with my family and friends, I decided I would run for school board. I figured if I was volunteering and advocating for children at my own kids’ schools, then I could have a bigger impact if I was on the board. Guess what – being a school board member is NOT about politics. It’s all about doing what is best for our NEISD kids – all 60,000+ of them! I will listen to, fight for and advocate for every student who needs a voice and for those who already have one. We are all part of a family in our district and that is the reason that I have served as school board President for the last four years. I bring a mama's heart and a determined commitment to encourage and promote every child. Every child and family has a story, and I appreciate and welcome each and every story.
I have no political aspirations – I am not on the board for any type of political gain. I serve because I have a passion for this District and doing what is best for kids. During my eight years on the board, I have loved going to events at schools and seeing the kids involved in the different programs that we provide. It warms my heart to see our kids doing what they love - whether it's the art programs, music programs, athletics, theater and the list goes on and on.
As a trustee, I see how the decisions that we make are affecting our kids. And I see the difference that I’m making when we add a program like middle school soccer. I was invited to attend a music class at Roan Forest. I got to dance and play ukulele and interact with the kids. Now that my own kids are grown and in college, it was so fun for me to get to be in the classroom and it brought back so many memories of when I was at Roan with my own kids. This is why I do it - I want to make sure that all children have a great experience at school. I do it because I’m a mom at heart. I treasure the opportunities that I have when I can interact with the children at our schools.
